Primary Focus: Dining Room Design Los Angeles
The dining room holds an important, almost celebratory position within a home. It is a space designed specifically to help us slow down, share stories, and enjoy long, intimate evening meals with friends. We have always believed that a dining space should feel magnetic rather than rigid. Our goal when we redesign your dining room is to shift away from the hands-off formality often found in traditional, stiff rooms. And create an intimate setting that naturally encourages guests to draw their chairs closer and linger long past the final course.
A great dining environment should feel perfect for a quiet family breakfast, while also being fully capable of expanding to host a festive holiday gathering. We achieve this balance by paying close attention to spatial scale, room acoustics, and soft mood lighting. We use hand-applied wall plaster, heavy linen window draperies, and plush wool rugs to absorb sound, keeping conversations warm and personal.
In our interior design studio, we approach these gathering spaces by weaving together our two distinct backgrounds: Laure’s intuitive appreciation for European antiques and historical narrative, and Allison’s eye for the airy, unforced proportions of California living.
"Dining is a shared ritual that should never feel rushed. The furniture, the acoustics, and the light must work together to make everyone feel completely relaxed"
Our dining spaces are layered with unique, custom items that tell a rich story:
- We build custom dining tables from scratch, using unique slabs of local walnut, hand-forged iron bases, or matte travertine stones tailored perfectly to your space.
- We avoid matching furniture sets from commercial showrooms, choosing instead to pair clean, modern chairs with unique vintage pieces collected from our travels.
- We design built-in credenzas and custom bar cabinets that display art and sculpture while neatly organizing silver, fine glassware, and table linens.
- We replace bright overhead lighting with a curated mix of vintage French pendants, low plaster wall sconces, and plenty of space for real candlelight.
By focusing on an authentic mix of historic character and modern ease, we create dining spaces that feel collected over time rather than styled all at once.
To trust Magali Sonterre with your vision is to ensure your home is always beautifully prepared, a warm, deeply personal space ready to welcome family and friends.
